Formerly part of Gowanus and Bay Ridge, the neighborhood of Sunset Park became a separate community in the 1960s. Located along the waterfront in western Brooklyn, Sunset Park was purchased and resettled by the Dutch then grew into a significant hub for agriculture. Its immigrant population grew tremendously when North American shipping in and out of New York Harbor was in its heyday. Today the neighborhood continues to be quite diverse and encompasses the thirty-five-plus-acre Industry City along the waterfront. This industrial complex is home to creative events throughout the year, retail stores, and food vendors, among other things, and is located next to Costco.

The neighborhood’s high point offers picturesque views of multiple Brooklyn neighborhoods, the hills along New Jersey and Staten Island, and the Statue of Liberty. Sunset Park also boasts several buses, in addition to service by the R, N, and D trains. Furthermore, Sunset Park has one of New York City’s most eclectic assortments of restaurants. There are tapas bars and taquerias along Fifth Avenue, and just a few blocks away along Eighth Avenue is Brooklyn’s Chinatown. There you’ll find twenty blocks of Malaysian, Vietnamese, Chinese, and other Asian dining establishments. The historical treasure of the neighborhood is the four hundred and seventy-eight-acre Greenwood Cemetery with its picturesque lakes, rolling hills, and more than twenty miles of winding paths. Moreover, the Battle Hill site within Greenwood provides stunning views of the Statue of Liberty. Other parks in the Sunset Park neighborhood include its namesake park, the Leif Eriksen Park and Square, McKinley Park, Shore Road Park, and the Owls Head Park.
