Comprising a peninsula bordered by Sheepshead Bay, Jamaica Bay, and the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the Brooklyn neighborhood known as Manhattan Beach was originally developed by Austin Corbin as two resorts. Real estate mogul Joseph P. Day bought the properties when the resort business declined, and in 1908, just north of the resorts, residential development began. Today, among the area’s many advantageous features is the gorgeous forty-acre Manhattan Beach Park and some breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, at the eastern end of Manhattan Beach is the seventy-plus-acre Kingsborough Community College that serves roughly thirty thousand students and was founded in 1963.
