Named after an early seventeenth-century French Walloon settler named Wolfert Gerritsen, the neighborhood had humble beginnings consisting of squatters bungalows and temporary fishing shacks. The first significant development consisted of a middle-class resort neighborhood comprising single-story bungalows on the peninsula’s south end. Soon after, people began to realize the peninsula was a fantastic place to live and larger Gerritsen Beach homes were constructed.

By the 1930s there were more than one thousand, five hundred homes in Gerritsen Beach and it became a full-fledged Brooklyn neighborhood. Today, it continues to be a popular place to live because of its affordability, tranquility, and spectacular natural resources.
