On the western part of the Coney Island peninsula, you’ll find the neighborhoods of Sea Gate and Coney Island. Coney Island is Long Island’s westernmost barrier island and is one-and-a-half miles wide and four-and-a-half miles long. It was formerly a true island but was joined to the mainland in the 1940s as a result of the Belt Parkway construction. The Coney Island neighborhood borders Brighton Beach and Ocean Parkway, Gravesend and Belt Parkway, and Sea Gate and West 37th Street.

Landmarks in Coney Island include the longest oceanside promenade in the country, Riegelmann Boardwalk. The amusement park found here attracts thousands of visitors every day of the year. It encompasses one of the world’s best wooden roller coasters, the 1927 Cyclone, and the world-famous Wonder Wheel circa 1920. Other landmarks include the Life Savers Parachute Jump built in 1939 and the B and B Carousell that was purchased by New York City so it could be restored. Other nearby attractions include Keyspan Park, home of the New York Mets and the Brooklyn Cyclones, the New York Aquarium, and Nathan’s Famous hot dogs and ice cream.
